EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. (WEAU) - An Australian movement has found its way to the Chippewa Valley as several men in the area grew moustaches in support of men's cancer for 'Movember.'

Thirty days of growing moustaches were celebrated Saturday as teams celebrated at Whiskey's Bar and Grill.

"There's significant others who are not too fond of the mo' sometimes but obviously it's a great cause," event organizer Ryan Stilp said.

That cause is to raise awareness and money for men's cancer research.

"There were a lot of people doing all kinds of things for a lot of different cancers out there. But there's very little that's being done for men's cancer as a whole," Stilp said. "One out of every six men get prostate cancer ... You've seen ribbons and you've seen wristbands and all these different things to create conversation." "The moustache is actually our ribbon and that creates a lot of dialogue, and it makes people realize that they need to go in, they need to get checked for prostate cancer and they need to be aware of what they can do to help themselves, in solving the crisis that is associated with men's cancer.

This was the first year the groups got together to support the cause.

The event has a personal connection to many including Stilp and Whiskey's owner Brad Windeshausen whose fathers both suffered from prostate cancer.

"That hit home with myself. Having that, that close, I really wanted ... to get involved," Windeshausen said.

After raising nearly $2,000 and giving prizes for the best mo's, the group said it will become an annual event.

"The Chippewa Valley generally tries to help out as much as they can and I think this is going to be a much bigger event next year," Stilp said.
