National Tourism Week: Fun Patrol kicking off summer season

Eau Claire, WI (WEAU) - Its National Tourism week and that means summer season is just around the corner. But what can we expect here in Wisconsin?

"Fun patrol defines fun. So where we go, we bring the fun,” said Jackie Boos of the Fun Patrol.

You've probably seen the Fun Patrol around town, with its bright colors and music. But you won’t just see people in it; you'll see a special stuffed dog decked out too.

"We did a vote and Barkley won,” said Boos.

While Barkley hangs out, the Fun Patrol is getting the word out to support National Tourism Week.

"Especially in this part of the country it kicks off the summer season,” said Linda John, Executive Director of Visit Eau Claire.

"Do you guys have an email address that we can send you weekly updates?” asked Kenzie Phillips of the Fun Patrol.

But handing out sun glasses and "I love travel" stickers, isn't all they’re doing.

"You want a sticker too?” asked Boos.

"Talk about the business of tourism, the economics, and the power of tourism. It's not just all fun. It really is about generating revenue to our communities,” said John.

Although there are the last sights of winter on the ground, events like Summer Fest and Country Jam are what help the community the most.

"One thing we really rely on is to promote to their friends and family and go to to find out the calendar events to find out what's going on,” said John.

Visit Eau Claire does a lot of marketing through social media to help stream line people from the cities and other parts of Wisconsin to the Chippewa Valley.

"Well we'd love to get you back on our list. Do you want to sign up for our e-newsletter?" asked Phillips.

"They really love our outdoor recreation. They love the small town feel, compared to what they're used to. They don't have to wait in long lines for traffic,” said John.

So no matter how old you are, look for the car that's filled with fun.

Other events going on this summer include the Farmer's Market on weekends and Sounds like Summer Concert series on Thursday nights in Phoenix Park.
