Nearly 20 American flags burned in Winona, MN

WINONA, Minn. (WEAU) -- One police department in our area is asking for the community's help in finding the person or people responsible for burning American flags.

For Mary Neis the American flag represents the sacrifices her father and other veterans have made.

“My father served in World War II, and like a lot of other people it has a special meaning,” said Nais.

An American flag outside of her home was burned at the beginning of August. It's one of nearly 20 reports the Winona Police Department has received. The Goodview Police Department has also received at least one report.

Chief Paul Bostrack said the flag burnings happened between approximately July 29 and August 16 on Winona's west side. Bostrack said there's person of interest.

“Somebody out there will recognize this person and it's my hope and the hope of this department that they'll give us a call, and steer us in the right direction,” said Bostrack.

Bostrack said no homes have been damaged.

Bob Allred with the American Legion in Winona said the flag burnings are upsetting.

“These soldiers they're out there risking their lives to protect this freedom and this instrument of our freedom and to see that some person or persons is out there destroying this is very unsettling,” said Allred.

Neis said she's had security cameras installed around her house since her flag was burned.

“I just got they catch whoever is doing it,” said Neis.

A Neighborhood Watch meeting will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion.

Contact the Winona Police Department AT 507-457-6302 if you have any information about the flag burnings.

Contact your American Legion or VFW if you have an American flag that needs to be disposed.
