CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) -- More changes could be on the way to downtown Chippewa Falls in the next few months.

The Plaza building on Bridge Street is set to be demolished in either late September or early October.

The land is owned by the city now but Mayor Greg Hoffman says some people are interested in buying it and putting up a new building.

He says at least two parties are interested in the spot; another two parties are potentially interested. All of this could mean new housing and businesses downtown.

"We wanna make sure we use the majority of that building, the 15,000 square feet and we would like to have it be a minimum three-story building," Hoffman said. "I actually have one party that I've talked with that has talked about putting a restaurant in on the 3rd or 4th floor."

It is a piece in a downtown puzzle and one that is constantly changing, says Teri Ouimette with Chippewa Falls Main Street.

"Many many of our buildings have been redone, rehabbed," she said.

She is seeing a growing demand for downtown homes.

"I have people stopping in regularly saying do you have any apartments or lofts available or things like that," she added.

And Mayor Greg Hoffman says a potential project like this is not just for people living in the present, it stretches far into the future.

"You're impacting the community for 50 to 100 years, so I think it’s important for the council, elected officials and city staff to do their due diligence to make sure we get the right buildings and right place," Hoffman added.
