BLACK RIVER FALLS, WIS. (WEAU) -- Captain Jennifer Amundson and Captain Collin Carriere are volunteer firefighters that consider themselves "on-duty" all the time.

So was the case Sunday, driving home from a conference in Wisconsin Dells, when they came upon a car fire on the interstate.

"I looked at Collin and I'm like there are people trapped inside we need to help," Amundson said.

They turned the car around. No protective gear, no firefighting or rescue tools on-hand.

"And so it was just kind of second nature, here's what we gotta go do, so let's go do it, irregardless of the tools we didn't have," Carriere said.

But they were not on the scene alone. Other people stopped by to help, including a nurse and off-duty state patrol officer. A miracle group in a dangerous situation.

"To have so many people that happened to be in that one place at the right time, it worked out for the best," Carriere said.

They were able to rescue the people from the burning car. Others who stopped by flagged down semi-trucks for fire extinguishers, helping put the fire out.

Helping prevent what could have been a more dangerous and deadly situation.

"New Lisbon firefighters were just arriving on scene and by that time the car was fully engulfed and the area where the patients had just been," he said.

Friends and fellow firefighters for five years, both say they consider themselves far from heroes.

"There's people that were doing it before us and people who will do it after us, and like I said it's great to know there are a group of people out there who will come to the help of others regardless of their own safety," he added.
