Online courses and degree programs becoming more popular at UW-L

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- More students at UW-La Crosse are going online to learn.

UW-L's Website said the number of online courses and degree programs is growing.

Students who have taken online classes say it's nice to learn away from the classroom.

“Just because of the convenience. It's really nice to be able to just be anywhere, and be taking your class,” said UW-L senior Tyler Wiese

“It's definitely nice for convenience sake that you can do all of the work right from your house,” said UW-L sophomore Jennifer Kaiser

“One way it's kind of nice, because you can either work ahead and do everything like ahead of time,” said UW-L senior Katie Kowalke.

“Independent study. I didn't have to go into class every day. I could just read the book, and do the problems on my own,” said UW-L senior Zach Wall.

This year UW-L offered about 380 online courses.

That's about 60 more than last year.

Plus, 365 more students took online courses this year compared to last year.

However, students said there are disadvantages to online learning.

“It would have been a lot nicer if we could go talk to her in person, but she was out of the state,” said Wiese.

“You obviously lose some of the face to face interaction,” said Kaiser.

“If you're not very stay on task you can kind of procrastinate and fall behind,” said Kowalke.

UW-L said students can also complete two bachelor's degree programs and five master's degree programs entirely online.

There were 15 new online instructors at UW-L this year.
