(WEAU) - Travelling alone while driving can often be too boring, especially when trying to play the license plate game. But college students across Wisconsin are now finding better ways to travel.
"You’re able to log on, post rides and get around the state really easy. If your looking for a ride, it definitely improves your access to getting around, " said Ben Ponkratz, Former Director of Office of Sustainability.
UW-Eau Claire is one of six other universities, like UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay that is using the site because it's a high-tech way to find a carpool.
"It’s really nice because I'm not from the Eau Claire area. It’s really nice to get to know people in my area where I live," said Junior, Ashley Shipman.
Ashley Shipman has used the service for half a year now, and it has helped her afford a daily commute from Bloomer to Eau Claire.
"It has saved me a lot of money. With the winter season and everything, you know you use a lot of heat in your car and it takes up a lot of gas," said Shipman.
The website recommends prices for each ride, if you're the driver, you can get the money through PayPal or in cash after the commute.
Participants in Zimride have the opportunity to ride in cars as either the driver or the passenger while saving the environment at the same time."
"If you are driving somewhere by yourself, your wasting more gas, your wasting more carbon emissions, these are all things that have a huge impact on our planet,” said Ponkratz.
The university says this kind of carpool really helps with the cramped parking lots.
"I think it's really a great opportunity for students here at the university. Basically it brings the current ride board we have into the 21st century," said Senior James Kust.
