EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. (WEAU) - Thursday was the busiest day of the year for delivering packages through the postal service, according to the Eau Claire Postmaster.

"We do have almost triple the packages this week," postmaster Kim Leith said.

As mail trucks are filled with holiday packages and gifts, carriers said they have added pressure to make extra deliveries.

"We're going to stay out until we get all the mail and parcels delivered," 19-year Eau Claire postal carrier Mark Briski said.

But with at least four inches of snow filling the streets and sidewalks, Briski said he knew Thursday would be a challenge.

"This morning I told the supervisor, probably an hour and a half extra is what I was going to need (to finish my deliveries)."

Leith said it was the worst possible day to have a storm.

"Everything's a little extra slippery so they gotta take a little extra care," she said.

"There's not really a lot you can do about it, just get the job done and don't dwell on it too much," Briski said.

But he said there are ways to make his job easier.

"Every year most carriers take a tumble or two ... when it's done snowing, do a good job shoveling the snow ... and just come back and sprinkle salt or sand on top of it," he said.

He said with extra layers, good boots and gloves, this weather isn't stopping him, or packages from getting under the tree.

"For the most part, in a storm like this, everyone's getting their mail today," he said.

The postmaster said now only express mail can be guaranteed to arrive by Christmas Day, and expects more carriers to be working through Monday to get everything delivered.
