EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. (WEAU) - Celebrating a first Mother's Day is a milestone for any woman, but for one Eau Claire woman, motherhood has given her a whole new outlook life after a dangerous delivery.

"Having (my son) is the most important part of this day," Leanna Munoz said.

But for the Eau Claire nurse practitioner and her family, this Mother's Day could have been much different. It started with a headache, as she was nearing her due date in Jan.

“I had gotten dressed and decided to go to the E.R,” Munoz said.

“That night, I said, do you want to go to the hospital?” Leanna’s husband Fernando Munoz said.

“About midnight, I said, ‘I feel better, let's hold off,’” she said.

But after going to bed, a scream woke Fernando.

“I jumped out of the bed and turned the lights,” he said.

“I had a seizure, so he called 911,” she said.

At the Mayo Clinic Health System, with Leanna unconscious, Fernando said he knew it was serious with so many doctors and nurses moving quickly to save his wife and baby.

Soon doctors diagnosed Leanna with Eclampsia, a rare condition that causes seizures during pregnancy.

“If the seizures had not been stopped, which was ultimately done by having the C-section, I would've continued to have the seizures, and ultimately, (my son and I) both would have passed away,” she said.

Sy Munoz was born weighing 6.6 pounds on Jan. 17.

“I was expecting I was happy to see my baby, but not that way. Because I see my wife connecting to all these machines, when they give me my baby, he's sleeping, with no answers for nobody from the doctors,” Fernando said.

Both Leanna and Sy's conditions quickly improved and were home within a week, and are now living healthy lives together.

“It's been wonderful; enjoying my family, my wife and my son,” Fernando said.

It’s given the family added appreciation to an already special first Mother's Day.

“I’ve got a wonderful woman and I’ve got a wonderful kid. Her first Mother's Day is really important for us,” he said.

“There's just nothing more wonderful than being a mom,” Leanna said.
