EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- RCU says it hopes to teach kids early on about how to be smart and manage money during "Money Smart Week."

It was story time at The Big Read event at RCU in Eau Claire on Saturday. WEAU's own Nikki Junewicz read "Bunny Money" and "Curious George Saves His Pennies" to kids 8 and younger at the event.

There were plenty of fun money-related games and activities for kids, helping to teach them about saving and spending money.

"We value very much the education financial education for children, starting at the youngest of ages. So we're always looking for opportunities to take it into the schools, into the public, into the adult world, where ever we can to encourage people to understand the value and importance of saving and knowing how to spend it right and how to share it with others," said financial education coordinator Mary Ginder.

This was RCU's first Big Read event in Eau Claire. Money Smart week continues through April 12th.

According to RCU: Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign to promote financial education across all age groups. Launched in 2002 by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the program is now active in more than 45 states through national partnerships with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Cooperative Extension and the American Library Association.

Money Smart Week events are open to the public at businesses, financial institutions, schools, libraries, nonprofits and government agencies throughout the country on topics including kids and money, unemployment, managing student debt and retirement.
