Saturday mail delivery might not be gone

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Post Office’s plan to eliminate Saturday mail starting in August, may not be a done deal.
Congress has passed a spending bill that would require six day mail delivery, and it’s awaiting President Obama’s signature.

The Post Office said it’s losing 25 million dollars a day under its current operation. It’s also lost 1.3 billion dollars in the last 3 months of 2012. By switching to 6 day package delivery and 5 day mail delivery the Post Office says it would save about $2 billion a year.
However, some people said they don’t want that to change, and said there are other ways to cut costs.

“With the senior citizens, in our country, I think we need to have six day mail delivery. They rely on the mail. They don’t have the Internet. Most of them,” said Deb Abbott.

U.S. Postal Service Media Relations Manager David Partenheimer said in a statement that “independent market research and polling shows strong public support for the new delivery schedule.” And some people here said the change wouldn’t affect them too much.

“I don’t have a problem with that. Most things you do now are online. So I’m fine with mail delivery 5 days a week and package delivery 6 days a week,” said Sue Horne.
“It wouldn’t make a big difference for me, personally, I don’t get a whole lot of mail other than bills and nonprofit organizations asking for money,” said Lewis Kuhlmann.

Partenheimer also said a change in delivery is a “responsible and reasonable approach to address our urgent financial situation and America’s changing mail habits.” The Post Office said once President Obama signs the continuing resolution, it will meet with its Board of Directors to figure out what to do next.
