Schaffhausen home off housing market, Oberle home for sale

RIVER FALLS / EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. (WEAU) - A real estate agency has dropped a listing in River Falls where three young girls were murdered.

Their mother, Jessica Schaffhausen asked to cancel the listing because she says the sale of the house would mean tens of thousands of dollars for the girls' father, Aaron Schaffhausen, who's charged with killing the girls.

The home of Paul Oberle in Eau Claire is for sale, listed at $59,900 on the 1300 block of Vine Street. Oberle was found beaten to death on the lawn on June 9, police said.

His neighbor, James E. Olson, is charged in his murder.

Realtors said selling these homes can be difficult, but that not all buyers are discouraged.

Kelly Mertens, who lives on Vine Street in eau claire, just a block away from where police said Oberle was murdered, said knowing what happened will remain in the back of her mind.

"When we walk by it, it is kind of creepy," Mertens said. "It's not as scary anymore, but i think that'll always be there for years to come."

Kleven Real Estate broker/owner David FitzGerald said some buyers are uncomfortable living in a house with a dark past.

"There are some people that that's not going to bother them at all, some who it bothers a lot and a lot in between," FitzGerald said.

"Certainly the more horrific the incident, the more value it's going to lose ... Because somebody's willing to live with that stigmatism of that house, they may get a better value on the house," he said.

He said the law doesn't require sellers to disclose what has happened if no one asks, but if potential buyers ask pointed questions, by law, the agent can't lie.

"I think it's good to be transparent relative to property to have people know everything," he said.

With the homes Oberle and Olson sitting empty, neighbors said they would feel more at ease if someone would move there.

"I hope that, just for the sake of Paul's family that lives across the street, they can see a nice family or whoever move in there and take care of the property and stuff and that's just kind of some closure for them and move on," Mertens said.
