Volunteers from the Western Wisconsin Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to a home fire in Elk Mound to provide canteen services for working firefighters and law enforcement officers on the scene. A Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteer has arranged to provide assistance with food, clothing to meet the emergent needs of the family displaced due to the fire damage to their home. Organizational resources will remain available as their recovery begins.

Firefighters are investigating a house fire that started in Elk Mound Saturday evening. Elk Mound fire chief Les Shafer says crews were called in around 5:45 p.m. to a home on 906th St.

He said heavy smoke was coming from the basement and flames from the kitchen window. There was too much smoke and heat for firefighters to get inside the home right away.

Crews from several area fire departments brought in water to fight the fire, including Township, Menomonie, Boyceville, Sand Creek, Chippewa Fire Dist. and Colfax.

Shafer said the fire likely started near the furnace area and came up through the floor of the kitchen. The Dunn Co. Fire Investigation team is looking into the cause of fire.

Crews say no one was home at the time and no one was hurt
