State officials urge propane users to plan ahead for winter

Chippewa Falls, WI (WEAU) -- With the need for heat no longer an issue, you may not be thinking about propane during the summer. But, after the shortage we saw this past winter, the state says propane users should start planning ahead for colder months.

Credit manager at River County Co-op, Matthew Bartholomew says, "Last year there was a shortage of propane, so it is very important that people get their tank filled, And prices are great for summer fills. So, it's a good time to get your tanks filled."

Last winter Wisconsin grappled with a propane shortage due to extended periods of frigid weather.
Pipeline closures and heavy demand for propane used in drying grain are reasons as well. Now, the State Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection recommends propane users plan ahead.

Bartholomew agrees, he says, “Getting propane during the summer, people are going to get a better price. Just to give you an example, last year propane as high as $4.59 a gallon, and right now you can get propane for as low as $1.42 a gallon, if you own your own tank, or for a $1.47 if you lease your own tank. So, now is a really good time to get your propane because the prices are really good."

Batholomew says preparing now can save you a lot of money down the line. He says, "Right now is definitely the time to fill up your tank."
