Summit in Minneapolis to address gun violence

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Mayors, police chiefs and prosecutors from around the upper Midwest are meeting in Minneapolis to talk about gun violence -- and how they can work together to prevent it.

Minneapolis officials say authorities, policy makers and experts attending the Regional Gun Summit will share information and discuss their challenges in fighting gun violence. Authorities want to see how laws in the region differ, and figure out what works and what doesn't.

Thursday's summit is co-hosted by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. Authorities from Illinois, Iowa and Missouri are also participating.

Planning for the conference began a year ago, but its scope grew after recent mass shootings at a Minneapolis workplace, a Connecticut school, and shootings at a Sikh temple and mall in the Milwaukee area.
