Local teacher writes book about deer for children

With the big gun deer hunting opener just days away, a local elementary school teacher has released a book to help get children interested in deer.

The author says he wanted to show there are fun things to do in the outdoors all year round. He says the book is inspired by hunting, but it's not a book about hunting. For many families in Wisconsin, hunting is a life long tradition and hunter, Chad Frase, is using his love of deer and teaching to write a book.

"I've taught hunter's safety, I've taught fourth grade at Flynn Elementary for 10 years and hunting is something I do on my free time. I've been hunting since I was 12 and thought I have a pretty good audience in the 12 year olds and why not write a book," says Frase.

Frase wrote the book, Scouting Whitetails, with the hope of getting kids outside because he says there's something for everyone.

"Students often play outside, go on nature walks, I just put together a book that gives a little more guidance or puts a little more structure to that," says Frase.

He says he got the idea to write a book about five years ago and started working on it about two years ago. He says it has everything from cave paintings of some of the earliest recorded deer, to the tools you need to spot them today. He says it also has activities for kids and families to do in the woods like nature photography. The book costs $17 but Frase says it's not going to make him rich.

"The photographer and I don't plan on quitting our day jobs," says Frase.

The reward for him is getting more kids enjoying the woods.

"The hunting season would be safer and more enjoyable if kids were in the woods before and after the deer season. This book offers opportunities to do just that," says Frase.

The book is only sold online but Frase says all of the Eau Claire elementary schools have a copy as well as the Eau Claire library. He'll also have copies at a book signing on December 10th at Gander Mountain in Eau Claire.

Mr. Frase is a wonderful teacher and good role model for children. Though my children are in middle school now, they still talk about him all the time.
