CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis (WEAU)--The days of phone calls and school mailings are long gone. Chippewa Falls is the latest school district to go mobile, launching an app for Apple and Android products to keep parents and students up to date.
“The bottom line is that there are more smart phones and mobile devices than there are desktops and our students and parents aren’t always at home on their desktop, so it made sense as a district to meet them where they are at,” District Technology Director Scott Kowalski said.
Kowalski says strong communication between parents, students and the school has always been a goal of the district and now there's an app for that!
“There are news items, lunch items, contact information, athletic updates and schedules, right now, it’s still a work in progress and we hope to add to it,” Kowalski said.
The app is meant to be a one stop shop. Parents and students can individualize their app to get notifications for specific schools and programs. The app also gives the schools a way to share district-wide events and stories.
“The news feed is pulled from the district website,” Kowalski said.
The app launched Monday (4/8) and already has hundreds of downloads. "It’s so much easier to keep track of everything that’s going on," Tajlan LaRue said.
LaRue has three kids in the Chippewa Falls District at three different schools. She says the instant notification helps her stay organized.
“Right now, I’m waiting for my daughter and although I’m waiting not at home, I know exactly what class she is in and when she’ll get out,”LaRue said.
The app was developed for the district by a company called Parent Link. Kowalski says the startup cost was about $600 and there will be a small annual fee.
"It’s just another way to get our message out and communicate,” Kowalski said.
Kowalski says the district is working on connecting Infinite Campus, the program the district uses for grading, into the app. Right now parents can access grades through a link on the app.
