EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Thousands of runners laced up and raced through town Sunday morning for the 5th annual Eau Claire Marathon.

The 26.2 mile course took runners from Carson Park, past the North Crossing, around the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport, and all the way down to Putnam Drive before finishing back at Carson Park.

Nearly 400 marathon runners, 1000 half-marathon runners, 56 relay teams and 55 two-mile runners made their way through trails and parks with temperatures in the 40s and 50s.

Organizer Karen Drechsel said she was concerned when it snowed last week, but was happy to see the warm up.

“This has just been an amazing event. Everybody just seems really comfortable and the routine and flow went really well,” said Drechsel.

Drechsel said the race also helped the local economy, boosting business at restaurants and hotels.

Eau Claire’s Scott Hayden won the men’s marathon in a time of 2 hour 36 minutes.

On the women’s side, Sarah McAll of Madison was the top finisher in 3 hours and 15 minutes.

WEAU’s own Megan Lowry and Courtney Everett also ran in the relay race.
