UW-Stout to hire monitors to try to stop smoking on campus

(WEAU) – Friday, the chancellor of UW-Stout announced the campus will hire tobacco monitors to try and stop people from smoking on campus.

The Stout campus has been tobacco free since 2010 and is the only public four year school in Wisconsin to do so. But the university says some people are still smoking in areas that are aren't allowed, so it hopes hiring tobacco monitors will help.

Executive Director of Communications and External Relations Doug Mell said "They're going to be trained, they're going to be told what to do and so we hope this will increase our level of compliance significantly."

The monitors will start at the beginning of the 2012 to 2013 school year.

UW-Eau Claire says it will also begin enforcing a campus smoking policy on May 1st.
