Village board votes to stop fluoride use in water a week after starting system
In a special Village of Holmen board meeting, members voted to stop putting fluoride in their water. Village President Nancy Proctor says she’s upset at the board’s decision because the village just started fluoridation last week and has already spent $82,000 on the project.

HOLMEN, WI (WEAU)--In last night’s meeting, the Holmen Village Board voted 4-2 to stop putting fluoride in its water.
During a 2008 referendum, in a close vote, the village voted in favor of adding fluoride to its water. But now, some board members are concerned that the chemical may be harmful if there’s too much of it the water.
Village of Holmen President Nancy Proctor says, "It has been documented over and over again that it is a great value for people to have fluoride in their water to help with strong, healthy teeth."
That’s why Proctor says she’s upset with the board’s decision to stop putting fluoride in the water, especially since the village just started it last week.
"One part per million, one drop per million of fluoride in the water does the trick, but it certainly doesn’t harm people," Proctor said.
But a new study done by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has some village board members concerned about their health.
"What they found, in doing studies of fluoride and drinking water, is they found that there are many more sources that people are exposed to with fluoride," said La Crosse County Public Health Nurse Charity Kocimski.
Kocimski says since there’s fluoride in toothpaste and mouthwash, for example, the government is recommending less fluoride in water.
"We want to be sure, we want to take a look before we go forward with fluoridating, before we lift the suspension," said Village of Holmen Board Member Dan Moser.
Moser says he wants the village to look into other studies on fluoride and wait for the government to formally introduce guidelines for fluoride use in water.
At the same time, Proctor says she’s working with a legal team to see how the village can work with board members to put fluoride back in the water.
