Viterbo started offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1967.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- An area university is being recognized for having an environmentally friendly building.

Viterbo University’s School of Nursing building has been given the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver designation.

Some reasons why Viterbo received the honor include having a chilled beam system, which is 20% more energy efficient than a standard air conditioning system, having recycling containers throughout the building with signs to encourage recycling, a rock garden, which decreases storm water deposits into the city’s storm water system and drinking fountains, which were designed to make it easier to fill bottles to try to help reduce the use of plastic bottles.

“It shows Viterbo’s commitment to sustainability, to being good stewards of our resources. I know it’s very important to the students, faculty, employees,” said Viterbo University physical plant director Gene McCurdy.

The School of Nursing building opened in August 2011.

It took Viterbo a couple of years to complete the process of applying for the LEED Silver designation.
