WOOF! Local dog treat business helping non-profits

(WEAU) - Knick knack patty whack give a dog a bone. For Kristin Southard of Eleva the smell of dog treats baking in the oven is something she knows all too well.

"This is basically the supply area where we keep our ingredients for what’s going in the treats from unsweetened carob ships to unsweetened flour and peanut butter,” said Kristin Southard, Treat Me Right owner.

It’s a business her and her son started to help shelters and rescue groups where she got her two dogs Roxy and Ruby, who are her official taste testers.

"I did a lot of research initially on things that should be in them, things that should not be in them," said Southard.

You won't find sugar in these, but rather things like unsweetened apple sauce. Then they’re topped off with natural yogurt and colored from plant extracts.

"Our rack, once the treats are decorated they go here to dry, which fills up quickly so we end up putting them various other places as well,” said Southard.

But how is this helping nonprofits?

"The bags of treats sell for $10.99 and out of the $10.99, $3 out of every bag goes to that organization,” said Southard.

So for about 10-15 days, “Treat Me Right” partners with a charity online. Once the sales window ends, they take $3 from every bag sold and write a check.

“We give back close to 30% of what we take in, which is a huge amount. I mean we just tried to figure out the most we could give back and still stay in business,” said Southard.

Kristin says she's helped places in New York and Nebraska. Then February 22nd, she started helping Bob's House for Dogs which goes until March 8th.

But, it’s proven to be a time consuming business.

"We stack them up and then dehydrate them, 6 hours, 8 hours,” said Southard.

But it’s all worth it in the end even for her two taste testers.

"It’s just a really cool feeling that you know that its making a difference for these groups and places,” said Southard.

All treats are approved by the Department of Agriculture and come with nutrition labels.
