MENOMONIE, Wis. (WEAU) -- University tuition seems to get more and more expensive. Though a university spokesman insists its rates are competitive. Now, the Governor is raising the question of whether higher education is truly affordable and accessible, and he is proposing a possible tuition freeze.

"If students can't come to the university, they can't afford the university, we have a serious problem,” said Communications Director at UW-Stout Dough Mell.

The measure would reassure in-coming students that the price they will pay for tuition would not change through-out the years they spend at a UW-school.

"Tuition freeze will benefit students, those we are having a hard time affording college, however, if state aid doesn't come in and take the place of the tuition revenue, what’s going to be an impact? Would it mean higher class sizes? Would it mean fever class offerings? Would that mean smaller university?" said Mell.

Some students say education is worth every penny, but knowing the price isn't going to skyrocket would be reassuring.

"It is pretty expensive, but I think it's an ok price, and it makes me feel comfortable paying for it. And paying the same price for next four years would make me feel safe coming back,” said UW-Stout Freshman Beau Berke.

The good news is- Stout says it's still a bargain to attend UW-system schools when you compare the price with universities in neighboring states.

"My brother goes to a private school that's 40-thousand a year. My parents like that I'm going here because it's obviously a lot cheaper, and I think it's reasonable, I really do,” said UW-Stout Freshman Grace Rowland.

Another option Walker put out there is a tuition cap, which limit the percentage tuition could go up. However, nothing is written in stone. The New Year’s budget won't be available until February and no legislation has been officially proposed yet.
