(WEAU) -- "I bow hunt and rifle hunt and we generally hunt near Holcombe in that area," said Al Nelson.

Every year he is out for deer hunting season. He is true to the sport and wants to enjoy it for years to come. And knows that might mean some changes.

"I would like to see the hunting tradition continue," he said.

On Friday, he was happy to hear the latest budget provisions from Governor Walker that act on recommendations put out by Dr. James Kroll, also known as Dr. Deer.

Dr. Kroll was appointed by the governor last year to find ways to improve deer management across the state. On Friday, the governor acted on those recommendations, laying out new budget provisions related to deer management.

"I think for hunters what that means is that the recommendations from the report are moving forward and going to be implemented," said Kurt Thiede with the Wisconsin DNR.

He says that is good news for hunters who were waiting for change. He says hunters will already notice more communication with the DNR, a big recommendation in Kroll's report.

It also sets up better deer management with private landowners.

"What they do is collect data for the Department of Natural Resources and the biologist, so the biologist and landowner work to set harvest goals for that property," he said.

It also lays out more resources for mapping and managing Chronic Wasting Disease.

But one hunter we caught up with says it does not go far enough.

"It looks like it's mostly for private land rather than public land," said Steve Flynn. "I don't know how many days I sat on public land without seeing a deer."

Flynn says by using a quota system too, there will be enough deer for everyone to enjoy the sport for years to come.

"Go back to the quota system on doe tags where you gotta apply for them, let the deer herds come back up so you can see one once in a while," he said.
