Western WI superintendents weigh in on school safety changes

(WEAU) - While the President and Vice President of the United States discuss what to do to curb gun violence, superintendents from across the country are asking for action to prevent future attacks.

National Superintendents Roundtable wrote a letter to the political leaders and school administrators from Mondovi, Durand and Elk mound, echoed the call for action, saying their buildings are in need of security upgrades, like buzz-in doors, safer locations for offices and new cameras.

"At this minute, hopefully there's no school shootings going on, but we know that we're just as likely as the next school down the road to become a victim to that. We have to look at these safety issues and make sure we're as safe as we can possibly be," Elk Mound Superintendent Ronald Walsh said.

"There's going to be some limitations on what people can do, but we understand we are not immune from these things," he said.

"If we could get some financial support from the state or federal level, it would definitely help us implement and become more proactive in safety," Durand Superintendent Greg Doverspike said.

Mondovi Schools Superintendent Cheryl Gullicksrud said it's about more than locked doors or armed guards.

"This a very broad topic, in the situations that have been had with the shootings. Looking at the mental health issues, looking at the families that maybe were looking for support, and couldn't find it. Looking at security of the buildings. There are all kinds of pieces here. It's not just a one answer, because it's not just a one-problem issue," Gullicksrud said.

None of the three schools have officers on campus, and the superintendents said allowing conceal and carry for staff, would bring up added challenges that may or may not make things safer.
