White snow means green money for those in the snow biz

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – There’s no business like snow business and it proves to be true for dozens of businesses looking to plow your driveway.

The city of Eau Claire say it measured 14.7 inches of snow in the city. In Chippewa Falls, ten inches of powder fell and down in La Crosse, seven inches were measured.

And for those in the snow biz, they say that’s where the money’s at.

After a mild start to the winter, Sunday’s big snowfall was one that caught everyone off guard, including those in the snow removal business.

“You know it’s going to snow at some point, but from all the forecast, it didn’t look like we were going to get as much as we wound of getting,” said Todd Adams, owner of Adams and Sons.

For him and many others who work in the snow business, the flurries are good news.

“I’ve been plowing snow for about 30 years and doing roof snow removal for about 20,” said Adams who also operates a remodeling and construction business.

With a drought this summer and a late beginning of winter, those in lawn care and snow removal are at battle with Mother Nature.

“It’s hit or miss. Two years ago was busy all the time,” said Adams. “Kept busy all winter two years ago. Last year there was hardly any snow and this year it was off to kind of a slow start, waiting for December to get going. But we'll see what happens from there.”

It’s the same story for Heath Services, operated by Tyler Heath.

“During the winter, it’s spurts. Sometimes we'll sit. Last year, we sat two weeks. Hopefully it’s once a week or once every other week that we get a snow storm. Preferably three to four inches though,” said Heath.

He said it took more than three hours to plow the parking lot at Red Robin in Eau Claire with the non-stop snowfall.

Heath added their fall cleanup had just ended last week.

“We get a lot of rentals, we get a lot of personal residential, we have a few commercial places,” said Heath.

And don’t think it’s easy as simply pushing the plow for these folks.

“Last night was a tough one because there was a layer of ice underneath everything. It was just really hard to push. The truck was hard to get a grip and hard to stay on hills without sliding back down so it made for a challenging evening,” said Adams.
