Winona State hoping to secure funding for Education Village

WINONA, Minn. (WEAU) -- An area university is hoping its education majors will be able to learn on their own mini campus.

Winona State University is proposing a $22.8 million Education Village.

Plans call for renovating Wabasha hall, the Wabasha Recreation Center and Cathedral Elementary School.

However, Winona State would have to purchase Cathedral Elementary School from the Diocese of Winona.

The interim dean of the college of education said the university is hoping to secure funding during the Minnesota legislative bonding session.

She said the college would like to have all of it paid for, but at the very least would like to have funding for the planning phase which is nearly $5.9 million.

“We’re very optimistic and looking forward to the future and hoping that our hope and our dream comes true,” said Dr. Jan Sherman.

If the university secures full funding, Sherman said construction could start spring of 2015.

However, if Winona State only secures funding for the planning phase construction could start in 2016.
