MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin's dairy farmers continued to see improved milk production in September.

The latest federal statistics say the state produced 2.2 billion pounds of milk in September. That's a 1 percent increase from the same month a year ago.

National production was also up 1 percent, to 14.8 billion pounds.

Wisconsin remains the country's No. 2 milk-producing state. It's well behind California and well ahead of third-place Idaho.

California produced nearly 3.2 billion pounds of milk in September, an increase of less than half a percentage point from September 2012. Idaho's dairy farmers harvested 1.1 billion pounds, or half of Wisconsin's yield.

Wisconsin and California combine to produce more than one-third of the nation's milk.
