Wisconsin conservationists re-launch anti-mine ad

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Environmentalists are re-cycling a television ad imploring the state Senate to kill a bill that would overhaul Wisconsin's mining regulations.

Republicans introduced a bill in January designed to help Gogebic Taconite open an iron mine near Lake Superior. Opponents say the bill would lead to devastating pollution.

The League of Conservation Voters announced Thursday it was running an ad statewide saying the bill would expose families to deadly chemicals and asking people to call senators and tell them to stop the measure. The bill's author, Republican Sen. Tom Tiffany, says the group is lying about the bill.

The organization ran the same ad during a debate on a nearly identical mining bill last year. Gogebic Taconite officials dismissed the ad then as fear-mongering.
