(WEAU)-Police arrested a woman after a high speed chase.

The Sparta Police Department says on Saturday just after midnight, an officer was driving through the Wal-Mart parking lot when he saw a woman parked in the fire lane near the front of the store acting suspicious. The officer noted that the woman, 28-year-old Krystal Kogutkiewicz from Sparta, was seated inside a pickup truck and that she was purposely trying to shield her face as the officer drove by. When the officer stopped and approached the vehicle on foot, she drove off at a high rate of speed. Kogutkiewicz led officers on a pursuit through several west-side neighborhoods and Mount Hope Cemetery before driving through residential yards and back into the Wal-Mart parking lot. The pursuit then continued north on Highway 27 where Kogutkiewicz lost control of the vehicle and hit an embankment near the intersection with Highway 71. She then tried to flee on foot, however, she was quickly caught by officers.

Shortley after the pursuit started, the vehicle owner, 25-year-old Eric Lepley from Sparta, reported the truck as stolen. Lepley and Kogutkiewicz had traveled to the store together and it appears she took the vehicle without his permission while he was inside the store. While she was attempting to flee, she hit a parked vehicle and damaged a yard. A Sparta police vehicle was also damaged when an officer attempted to stop Kogutkiewicz using a PIT maneuver.

Kogutkiewicz was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle while Under the Influence, among other charges. She also had a warrant for her arrest from a previous case. She was wanted by the Department of Corrections for violating her probation. She is currently being held in the Monroe County Jail.
