5 PM INTERVIEW: MLK Jr. Day of Service

EAU CLAIRE - Members of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and greater Eau Claire communities are invited to participate in volunteer projects as part of a Day of Service on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 21.
The Day of Service will commemorate King's life and legacy, said Joshua Swalheim, a UW-Eau Claire senior liberal studies major from Madison. Swalheim is the event's organizer and volunteer coordinator for the AmeriCorps ECLIPSE (Early Childhood Literacy Intervention Program, Services and Evaluation) program at UW-Eau Claire.
Volunteers will meet at noon Jan. 21 at The Community Table in Eau Claire for a meal. They will then break into smaller groups to join in community service projects during the afternoon. The Community Table is located at 320 Putnam St.
"We are working with local non-for-profit organizations for this day of service," Swalheim said. "These organizations vary in their missions, which range from providing free meals and/or groceries to those in need to providing support for victims of domestic violence. This is a great way to get involved on a holiday that was designated as a day on, not off."
People of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate, Walheim said, noting that UW-Eau Claire students can count the hours toward their service-learning requirement.
Volunteers may donate a nonperishable food item to The Community Table.
The service projects will end at 4 p.m., leaving time for volunteers to attend a Martin Luther King remembrance ceremony The Martin Luther King Day of Service is sponsored by UW-Eau Claire's Center for Service-Learning.
To register for the event, send an email to ECLIPSE@uwec.edu

Registrants will receive a free T-shirt and hat while supplies last.
