Brian Erickson from the Chippewa Valley Home Builders Association gives us some great idea's on how to help your lawn "Beat the Heat" this summer.

With the high temperatures we have been having lately, how should watering be changed to help your lawn beat the heat?
Water frequently and heavily - 1 hour/day, six days/week. Early morning watering during a heat wave is especially important in fighting evaporation. Watering during the hottest part of the day can also cause your grass blades to wilt.

I've heard that mowing your lawn during extreme heat can damage it. Can you talk about that?
In times of extreme heat or drought, you can actually kill large sections of your lawn in a single improper mowing. The general rule is that you should never mow more than 1/3 of the blade of grass. During very hot periods with minimal moisture, you can mow less of the blade, less often to help preserve water.

It's also a good idea to avoid mowing your lawn in the blazing sun of a 90-degree day for your own health!

Fertilizing is an essential part of maintaining a healthy beautiful lawn. Is it still safe to fertilize right now?
High temperatures and fertilizer can be a bad combination. Make sure you use caution and water properly if you are fertilizing right now. And make sure that you are putting down the recommended amounts of fertilizer. Waiting to fertilize until the temperatures drop a little lower is okay too.

Do you have any other recommendations for our viewers?
