A UW-Eau Claire student hopes a Website she’s part of launching will help people living with chronic illnesses manage their symptoms better and potentially help find a cure.

Rachael Korinek said she been chronically ill for about seven years.

The UW-Eau Claire senior has been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, lyme disease, chronic pain and chemical sensitivities.

“It’s hard to find anybody in real life, and it’s even harder to find anybody on the Internet similar enough to really understand day to day,” said Korinek.

That’s why Korinek is helping launch a web site called HealClick.com, which is currently being tested by about 900 people.

The free Website focuses on people suffering from neuroimmune or autoimmune illnesses.

She says she hopes the site will be open to people with any kind of chronic illness in the future.

“It’s a Website created for patients by patients,” said Korinek.

Korinek said HealClick users will be able to enter symptoms they’ve experienced, treatments, diagnoses and basic demographics such as age and location.

Then, the website will put that information into an algorithm and tell you how compatible you are with other users.

“You can instantly log on and see somebody doesn’t have anything in common with you versus has 90% of these important factors in common,” said Korinek.

Korinek said all information users submit to the site will be confidential.

She also said information on the site could help users manage their illnesses better and potentially help find cures.

“We’re actually taking this information and going to work with researchers to like run clinical trials and outcome based studies,” said Korinek.

HealClick is set to launch Tuesday, January 14.
