The environmental protection agency says U.S. schools spend $6 billion on energy costs.

That's why Wisconsin schools are taking part in the Governor's Energy Start School Challenge.

Thursday, the Eau Claire School District committed to cutting energy consumption by 10 percent.

The goal is to sign up 100 districts in the state. Districts get free coaching, tools and assistance.

There are 17 districts signed up so far.
