An Onalaska man is on target for possibly setting a hunting record in La Crosse County. Jerry Jorgensen shot an eight point buck while bow hunting.
The word is it may be the largest 8 point buck ever taken in La Crosse County with a bow. Jorgensen says the buck's antlers green-scored at 163 and one-eighth with a 160 net. That means it's very symmetrical and the tines are long, which is good.
Jorgensen was hunting a few weeks ago when he spotted a couple of does near his stand. He says a few seconds later a huge buck followed. He took his shot and got one of the greatest thrills of his life.
"And that was kind of a dead sprint to get over there and see what I had. A lot of times you have what they call ground shrinkage. You shoot a deer and you think he's a monster and then he's not as big as you thought, but this one was the opposite."
Bow hunting season runs through January 4th, with a break during the gun deer season.
