Just moments after becoming the third swimmer in Wisconsin swimming history to win the same event all four years of high school, Alex DeLakis had one person on his mind.
"My grandma, was hospitalized a couple of days ago," says Eau Claire Memorial senior, Alex DeLakis. "I wanted to go out there today and put a little smile on her face. I'm going to be seeing her tomorrow and so I wanted to bring her some good news and cheer her up."
So what was Grandma's reaction when Alex shared he was a state champion in the 100 breaststroke, again.
"My grandma was ecstatic. She was actually able to watch my races, the live streaming of it, and so she was really excited. She gave me a big 'ole hug and kiss," says DeLakis.
Alex finishes his high school career with 8 BRC titles, 6 sectional titles, and 6 state titles, but his favorite memory was made when his 4x100 free relay took second at state.
"Just to go out there and do that time and get that place with some of your best friends, is a great feeling."
Alex's will swim for the Badgers next year but leaves Eau Claire with more than just records.
"He has built his legacy in his competition and his ability but he has also built it in a teammate and a leader," says Memorial's swim coach, Dylan Leonard.
"I hope we kind of put Eau Claire on the map, we have a great program here at the high school and at the YMCA. Best advice I can give anyone is to just keep going with it, find an inspiration and roll with that."
