The Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year, Andi Ostenso may be short in stature, but she towers over her competition.

Andi is also the returning state champion in the two mile, yet the vivacious senior wouldn't describe herself as competitive.

"That's actually, I'm not very competitive. I'm always happy for someone if they do good," says Andi.

But that sparkling smile may disappear just a bit when the gun goes off.

"She's really bubbly but she really turns into a fierce competitor when the racing starts," says coach Brian Groothousen. "She's just one of those natural talents and works extremely hard. She warms up for her races more than anyone and cools down...she really takes her racing serious."

Running is often characterized as an individual sport, but Andi's vibrant demeanor and diligent work ethic has impacted her teammates.

"That makes me push much harder because she's so happy and she just wants the best of everyone. She puts herself behind everyone else, she's very influential," says teammate, Bailey Keeble.

"When I came out as a freshman, I had older boys who would push me," says Andi, "and just realizing how successful I could be I pushed myself. And I have so many people who are supporting me."

A standout in academics as well, Andi has signed an athletic scholarship to run cross country at Northwestern University

"But she's a really good scholar too," says distance coach, Annie Olson. "So they're getting the best of both, so they're getting a two for one deal here."
