"As Jared goes, that's kind of how our team goes," says Chippewa Falls head soccer coach Ben Goeman.
Junior Jared Ewings 11 goals and 3 assists have been a catalyst for the undefeated Cardinals.
"Just a great leader, not just in terms of attitude but also in effort on the field, in practice and in games," adds Goeman, "(he) takes advantage of every little opening in the defense, works really well with the 3 or 4 other guys up front that we have. And he's just relentless in his attack."
Through the first 10 games last season, the Cardinals scored 21 goals and gave up 18...this season through the first 10 games, the Cardinals have scored 34 goals, only giving up 8.
"Just trying to help contribute and get points on the board, if it's assisting, scoring or getting the ball in a position to score," says Ewings.
While Chippewa Falls is experiencing one of their best seasons, they have a tough opponent ahead. The Cardinals haven't beat the Old Abes since 2007 and Memorial has made state appearances 4 of the last 5 years. Scotty Nicolai is leading this year's squad.
"He's got magical feet, he's really creative, and he's massively talented so when you put those two things together it adds for a real dangerous offensive weapon," says E.C. Memorial head coach David Kite.
"He's a great dribbler and passer, he's very creative on those two aspects. And he also adds a very nice finishing touch to the team," adds teammate Peter Rentzepis.
Nicolai, with 18 goals and 11 assists thus far, draws attention from his opponents, freeing up his teammates.
"We also have so many other weapons that I don't think it matters, so if they have two people on me, another person will be open and they're just as good," says Nicolai
The expectations high every year for Memorial, the team welcomes the target on their back.
"I think that makes us raise our game and makes us prepare, every team we face, wants a shot at us. And it helps us be prepared and it helps us through the season to hopefully be ready for a playoff run," says Kite.
