The Elk Mound baseball team has only played one game this year, but it was a big one. As they beat the defending state champions, Prescott. The Mounders are a team to look out for as they are led by this week's Gordy's Athlete of the Week, Garett Phillips.

"My teammates lift me up, they make me feel like I belong there. I feel really comfortable pitching and I just really like to have the game in my hands," says Elk Mound pitcher, Garett Phillips.

All the Mounders agree. They want the ball in the hands of their 4 year varsity starter, who boasts a 22-2 record in the past 2 seasons.

"He has an above average high school fastball and mixes in a lot of really good off speed pitches," says Elk Mound head coach, Paul Andrea. "He is a competitor, sometimes to a fault at times but he's learned to reel it in, in the last year and a half or so."

"We have a great pitcher, throws strikes, can be around the plate," says teammate, Dan Bachman. "All we have to do is do our job...they might hit it but we're gonna make the play out there."

"He's a great player, he always gives us 100 percent on the field and he's got a lot of talent and he knows how to use it," adds teammate Hunter Dicus.

Garett has pitched over 145 innings, recording 225 strikeouts, but his confidence comes from his teammates.

"Definitely the team behind me. I mean our team puts the ball in play, we're good run scorers, we're fast on the bases. I mean our team just does what it takes to win," says Garett.

Garett picked up a baseball at the age of four. Now fourteen years later, he gets to continue his game at Century College.

"Ever since I was a young kid I always wanted to play college baseball and it just feels so good to know that I'm going to be taking it to the next level. And with my best friend, Hunter Dicus, it's going to be fun," says Garett.
