The 20th WIAA girls team tennis tournament will be held this Friday and Saturday in Madison. SportScene13's Jenn Chapman introduces us to this week's Gordy's Athlete of the Week, the Old Abes girls tennis team, as they seek their first state team title.
"Success kind of breeds success," says senior, Sara Kohler.
Eau Claire Memorial continues their dominance over Western Wisconsin with their fourth consecutive appearance at the state team tournament. This year's squad features experienced seniors and three very sharp freshman that contributed immediately.
"We're lucky to have three really good freshman that came in and then a lot of our other kids worked really hard to get where they are," adds Kohler.
"Our seniors accepted them and it's pretty easy to accept them when they're such nice kids, and obviously good players too," says coach, Jim Litscher.
Memorial's trip to state is the pinnacle of a group of girls hard work, all year long.
"Most of girls play every day and the indoor tennis center has been very nice to us and helps us out. I think in a lot of sports, they have to play in the off season and our kids do," adds Litscher.
The team record sits at an unblemished 23-0, giving the girls confidence that this could be the year.
"I think we have a really good team, top from bottom, bottom to top and I think that we have a shot," says freshman Catherine Lindsay.
"Well I'd love to win the whole thing, and I think we have that...I think we can do it," says Kohler.
With four runner-up finishes in school history, the team is focused on one match at a time
"It's a thrill and it should be fun. And it's a challenge and if you look beyond the first match, the first match might be your last match," adds Litscher.
