The Regis girls volleyball team is in a familiar situation, sitting atop of the Cloverbelt standings. In this week's Gordy's Athlete of the Week, SportScene13's Jenn Chapman introduces us to their top play maker, Shae Brey.
"She is 6 foot tall which is every coach's dream but basically she comes and works hard every day at practice and gives it all she's got," says volleyball coach, Kendra Pagel.
Eau Claire Regis outside hitter Shae Brey leads her team in solo blocks and kills.
"Her kills are like kills, like they're great. Makes everybody happy and it encourages everyone to do better and it just brings everybody up," says teammate Molly Smoczyk.
Shae feeds off the excitement from her teammates as she is surrounded by quality players.
"Just the intimidation factor," says Shae, "that we're a good team and that we have a lot of people that can put the ball down."
Though basketball may be Shae's favorite sport, she shows just as much effort and passion on the volleyball court, with her Rambler teammates.
"I definitely think that basketball helps me in volleyball a lot, with AAU, our coach conditioned us a lot and my core strength has gotten a lot better, so it helps me hit it a lot harder," says Shae.
The 18-3 Regis squad is accustomed to having the target on their back, something they welcome as they try to get to the state tournament.
"Part of the time I think they take it as a compliment, other times I know that teams are gunning for them in the conference because we usually are at the top," says Pagel. "But I, myself, would applaud them and give them honor for that because they work so hard."
