This week Mondovi will host Osseo-Fairchild, with hopes of ending the prep football regular season with an undefeated record. In tonight's Gordy's Athletes of the Week, we take a look at what has made the Buffaloes in the a gridiron powerhouse this year.
After stinging loss last year in the 1st round of the playoffs, the Mondovi Buffaloes came back strong this season, A big part of their 8-0 record can be attributed to a returning class of hungry seniors.
"We have 16 guys, in a small school you have a number like that you know you are going to have a great year, hopefully. All of our kids worked extremely hard this off-season," says head coach Mike Sinz.
"We have a lot of guys who put in a lot of time and effort to this team. We're a family and we have been doing our jobs and good things have happened," says senior Colter Dziekan.
The Buffaloes made a statement on Sept. 27th, when they battled defending state champions Glenwood City and captured a hard fought 22-21 victory.
"That was a huge win for us, not a lot of people gave us a chance going into that game," says Sinz, "Glenwood was averaging 65 points a game and just killing everybody and we played like we were capable of playing and w were fortunate enough to come out on top"
"It meant a lot because it kind of made a statement to the conference that we are here to play and we mean business," adds Dziekan.
Though being undefeated is great, Mondovi started the season with one goal, to win the Dunn-St. Croix conference.
"We knew what to do that we needed to go undefeated . I am just happy for our kids, we have been though a lot, our senior class has been through a lot with injuries and different things throughout the last three and four years, I am just happy for them because they put a ton of time in," says Sinz.
"We have been playing good all season and hopefully we have the momentum built up and we are going to make a run into the playoffs," adds senior Mitch Stamm.
