Athlete of the Week: Stanley-Boyd Football Team

The Stanley-Boyd football team isn't undefeated for just one reason. The combination of an explosive offense and a defense that is shutting down opponents, the Orioles find themselves on top.

Starting with quarterback Tyler Sorensen, a 3 year varsity starter who is defense's nightmare with his ability to throw the ball deep or run.

"I have a lot of options so it's nice, takes some pressure off me and helps our team out."

One of those options is receiver Dusty Spaeth.

"Whenever he's throwing it to someone, they get hot and all of a sudden they gotta key that other person and then it opens up the field for everyone else to get the ball."

Head coach Jeff Koenig's offense has put up 232 points so far...while their speedy defense has only allowed 30 points.

"We always say they're quick like ninjas and they gotta play fast. And they do a great job of taking in the game plan, learning it, making sure they understand it, and then executing on Friday night."

Ronny Ponick thinks their hard work in practice has paid off.

"I think it's as many reps as we take that's key and how fast we run them is what's our conditioning."

So is there a secret to their success?

"We've been together a long time, we've played together since elementary school. We trust each other, we have confidence in our teammates and each others abilities."

"These guys spend a lot of time together, both in the weight room in the off season. They put in a lot of hours during speed training, they go to a number of 7 on 7 tournaments in the summer so they develop the chemistry that they need."
