Catherine Wagner Captures National Title: Athlete of the Week

Emily Swift/Blugolds Senior: "It was a really good feeling. We were all, all the seniors, were kind of emotional. But it helped that we finished on a high note."

The UW Eau Claire women's golf team took a third place team finish at nationals this past weekend led by the program's first individual national champion, Catherine Wagner. The Blugold junior led from round one but was able to keep her focus on the ball rather than her lead.

Catherine Wagner/Blugolds Junior: "You can't really think about that you're in first place, or else for like me. I get stressed out, so it's just kinda a mind thing. Keep it out of your head and just do shot by shot, I guess."

Wagner tied for 14th at nationals her freshman year while tying for 9th her sophomore year.

Wagner: "I've really worked hard on developing my putting and the rest of my short game. I came in freshman year and had the worst putting stroke ever. I guess in the last two years, it's really improved a lot."

Meghan Sobotta/Blugolds Golf Coach: "Catherine is an amazing athlete. She's got so much talent which I'm so glad came through in this national championship for her. She just works really hard and she's got the game, mentally and physically. It's very fun as a coach to watch."

The Blugolds have made an appearance at nationals 12 out of the 13 years the championships have been held. This marks the third time they have recorded a 3rd place finish.

Swift: "We have a good reputation as a good program so we get a lot of good players in and everyone works hard."

Wagner: "Being on a 3rd place team means a lot, its part of the program history. So I mean it's an awesome feeling and congratulate my teammates."

With the return of Wagner and three freshmen, the Blugolds look to keep their tradition of excellence alive.

Sobotta: "I'm hoping for big things again. I'd love to see her do it again. I know she's got the game, the potential. You know it can only get better for her and the rest of the team."

Swift: "Golf can take you a lot of places and you can do a lot of fun things if you really work at it."
