The Colfax boys basketball team left for Madison this afternoon ready to take on Whitefish Bay Dominican in tomorrow night's WIAA division four state semifinals... A major reason for the Vikings first trip to Madtown since 1978 has been the play of junior Austin Huss... SportScene 13's Jenn Chapman has more in tonight's Gordy's Athlete of the Week.

Austin Huss/Colfax Junior: “It was a big change, the kids were different, the style of play was different but I think I adapted to it well and it’s been fun!”

The move from Alaska to Western Wisconsin last year for Austin Huss posed minimal challenges as he adjusted quickly to his mother’s hometown and western Wisconsin basketball. Now he is the leading scorer on a state bound Colfax team.

Hayden Fehr/Colfax Senior: “When we need him to take over in games he does it for us and he can take the ball to the hole, post up, and shoot the three, do whatever he needs to help us win the game.”

Greg Christoffel/Colfax Senior: “Huss always gets us going, even if we’re down, he sparks the team, he sparks runs and sparks intensity, out of all of us. The Fall Creek game when we were down early in the game, Huss had those back to back threes and those were big, he got us all going there and from that point on I think we’re all feeding of his energy.”

Huss has put up big numbers in the post season, dropping 25 points against Elk Mound, 23 against Fall Creek, and 22 against Boyceville but it’s his passion for the game that is most evident.

Coach Andrew Meade: You have a player who likes the spotlight, who really plays well in big games. Plays very hard, probably our most emotional player but he does seem to thrive off that emotion

Austin Huss: I get fired up during the game and it’s fun and emotional for me and I just love the rush of being able to play in front of big crowds and perform well, and ever since I was little I wanted to play in front of big crowds like this.

Austin’s mom was a part of the Colfax girl’s team that went to states in 1994, the boys program hasn’t been to Madison since 1978, they won the state title that year. The close knit Colfax community is ready for another run.

Coach Andrew Meade: “We have a special situation with a couple of players whose dads were on the 1978 team and it’s all a family thing. I’ve been here a long time, I taught Austin’s mother in class. It’s a great community, they love their basketball, they love it like no other place. We’re just trying to do them proud.”

Austin Huss: “This has not happened since 1978 and this whole town…you know it’s been such a long time since the guys team has gotten back on track and it’s been great for us to finally win games and get on track and to get to state is a wonderful accomplishment for us.”
