E.C. Immanuel girls basketball player Abbie Hein, Prep Athlete of the Week

Last week Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran's Abbie Hein broke the one-thousand point scoring barrier and now finds herself 33 points shy of the school's all-time record. SportScene 13's Jenn Chapman profiles the Gordy's Prep Athlete of the Week.

Abbie Hein/Eau Claire Immanuel Junior Guard: "At that point all I really wanted to do was beat Independence because we have only beat them once before in Immanuel history so I was happy but at the same time I didn't want to get too caught up in it."

Trying to stay focused after scoring her 1000th career point as only a junior was Immanuel Lutheran's guard Abbie Hein, the huge milestone a testament to Abbie's work ethic since a young age.

Abbie Hein: "Practice, I'd go out in and shoot in our driveway when I was little, and I would go to the gym or whatever, and in the mornings here I get up at 530 and me and my sister Emily come down and shoot for an hour or so, that helps."

In addition to shooting practice, Abbie says she reads books about the game and has gone to camps that teach thinking skills for basketball. Her coach says she is in every essence a student of the game.

Dr. James Sydow/Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran Head Coach:
'We've had pieces before but she can do everything and do it well. And she spent the time to develop the skills to be really good at playing basketball. And scoring just a small part of it."

Jenn Chapman/Reporting: "Immanuel Lutheran gym holds family history for the Hein's. Abbie's mother played on the first varsity team here, and now Abbie is on track to break the school's career point record which is held by her second cousin Missy.

Emily Hein/Abbie's Sister: "I guess it sets the standard so I guess we have a lot to live up to but its fun."

Dr. James Sydow: "I tell Abbie's mother that Abbie is a much better player than she was. Although Abbie's mother could really shoot. And the key point in all of this is that she's worked hard to develop those skills and obviously she's got some God given gifts but she's developed them and worked at them."

With over a 3.7 GPA, Abbie also takes her studies seriously, expressing that her future is not all about basketball.

Abbie Hein: "I'd like to play division 1, but it's all going to depend on the college. You go to college to get an education so it's going to depend on what I figure out what I want to do and what's best for my education."
