Spring Valley girls cross country team- Athletes of the Week

In our Gordy's Athlete of the Week segment, SportScene 13's Bob Gallaher honors the Spring Valley girls cross country team after capturing the WIAA Division 3 state championship last Saturday. A remarkable story of how in just three years, the Cardinals went from virtual unknowns to WIAA state champs.

Breanna Colbenson, Division 3 state runner-up says, "I believe it shows that you can set a goal, no matter how high and you can achieve it. Two years ago we won our first meet ever and there were three other teams there and we would celebrate when we came in 2nd to last because we beat a team. And then we set our sights on state and made state, and last year after we were 7th, we were like we want to win it and we did so you can set a goal no matter how high and you can achieve it if you work hard."

Led by Colbenson, who was state runner-up in D3, the Spring Valley cross country team edged out the favorite Darlington by a mere two points in capturing the state title. In doing so, they left a lasting legacy of accomplishing something never done before by a girls team in school history.

Senior Riley Bowman says, "It's exciting, it's nice to say that we're the first girls team in our school's history to ever be a state champion. It will be nice to know year's from now, my name will be there and the girls on my team, their names will always be there."

For coach Jim Herold, he says his team set the bar high and his kids delivered, hard work and dedication that was rewarded with a state championship.

Herold says, "We set a standard on how to set a goal, and they worked for this thing and they didn't quit. They realized the price begins a long time ago, paid up front a long time ago to get something Saturday. So the standard is, whatever your goal, pay up front, and pay and pay and pay and you might get it. These girls are amazing and they definitely got it."
