Tim Nelson Brings Home the Gold: Athlete of the Week

It's been an amazing year for UW-Stout senior track standout Tim Nelson who captured a national title during the indoor season, then brought home two more national championships this past weekend at the NCAA Division 3 outdoors in California... And today was named the U.S. Track and field men's track athlete of the year. We honor Tim tonight as our gordy's athlete of the week.

UW-Stout's Tim Nelson re-wrote the Blue Devils record books this past weekend at the D3 national championships, winning the 10000 meter national title last thursday, then doubled his pleasure by adding the 5k to his trophy collection making him the school's first ever three-time distance champion.

Tim Nelson/Blue Devils Distance Runner: "This weekend I ran 9 miles worth of race and thousands and thousands of miles went into the race so it's really rewarding to stand on top of that podium, but the journey to get there is really sweet."

"I would say i'm more of a power runner and i'm not super fast, but i'm good at holding a relatively fast pace longer that most people feel comfortable doing. I would say my determination and will are my strengths on the track."

Along with his national titles, Tim is WIAC's scholar-athlete of the year... Nelson's coach Matt Schauf says what Tim has accomplished this year on and off the track is incredible.

Matt Schauf/Blue Devils Distance Coach: "It's your ultimate dream, you never know if it's going to happen, so few people pull off what he was able to do this indoor and outdoor track and field season and so to have it come to a culmination like that, with it being his senior season is very special."

Nelson: "All great champions you have to be tough and that's what I pride myself is that I believe I'm tougher than anybody else on the track and I'm willing to take more pain than anybody else."

Nelson's pain was the Blue Devils' gain, as the Augusta native helped lead UW-Stout to a third place team finish, the best in school history.

Nelson: "Carry that trophy with all of my teammates, we had a great team this year and to cap it off with best ever finish words can't describe that. That was more satisfying than any individual accolade."

Thanks for this story. This was, by far, the best athlete of the week feature in a long while.
