Blue Devils clinch WIAC tournament bid with win over UW-Oshkosh

MENOMONIE (April 28, 2013) - When Taylor Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn) smashed an RBI single to the left field fence in the bottom of the ninth giving UW-Stout a 4-3 first game win over UW-Oshkosh Sunday, she also helped the Blue Devils clinch a berth in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Softball Championship next weekend at a site yet to be determined.

The Blue Devils (22-11, 9-7 WIAC) held a 3-1 lead in the game at Don & Nona Williams Stadium, and saw that lead disappear in the seventh inning. An error and a deep fly ball lost in the sun allowed the Titans (22-8, 9-3 WIAC) to tie the game. Then, the Titans loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but pitcher Tori Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn) was able to work out of the jam.

Stout stranded one runner in the eighth inning, but got no one further than first base, then put the Titans down in order in the ninth.

Erin Moss (Sr, Munster, Ind) recorded a one-out single and advanced to second when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Alison Gray (Sr, St. Cloud, Minn) was intentionally walked in attempt to force an out, but Workman's single to the left field fence scored Moss from second base to give Stout the win.

Both teams finished with nine hits, and both teams committed costly errors as Stout had two errors and Oshkosh four. Workman went the full nine innings, striking out four and walking none. Sam Hastings (Jr, Waukesha), Moss, Taylor Workman and Kaitlin Stark (Fr, Hastings, Minn) each had two hits, with Workman driving in two runs.

The Titans' Tess Fadness and Lindsey Luedke each finished with three hits and Hayden Krueger had two, with two RBI.

In the nightcap, the Titans' bats came to life as they pounded out 14 hits in a 15-0 win that was ended after five innings.

Stout will close the regular season, Tuesday, April 29 when they travel to Hamline University for a 4 p.m. non-conference start.
