Brewers Fall to Padres, Cubs Clinch NL Central Title

Khalil Greene hit a go-ahead double and drove in three runs as the San Diego Padres boosted their playoff hopes with a 6-3 victory over Milwaukee. The loss eliminated the Brewers from postseason contention.

Greg Maddux is 14-and-11 with his 347th career win. He gave up three runs and six hits in five innings as San Diego opened a two-game lead in the NL wild-card standings. The Padres remained one game behind Arizona in the NL West. Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 42nd save in 47 chances.

Meanwhile in Cincinnati, Alfonso Soriano's leadoff homer kick-started Chicago out of its doldrums and right-hander Carlos Zambrano shut down Cincinnati 6-0. The Cubs' victory coupled with Milwaukee's loss to San Diego gave the Cubs the NL Central title.

Thousands of Chicago fans made the five-hour road trip and cheered every move by the Cubs.

Since returning from a strained thigh that sidelined him for most of August, Soriano has gone on a tear unsurpassed in Cubs history. He has 13 homers in September, matching Ernie Banks' record of 50 years ago. His blast in the first inning was his 32nd of the year and his sixth leadoff homer in September -- the most by any major leaguer in any month.

Zambrano is 18-and-13. He allowed six hits in seven innings. Bob Howry and Ryan Dempster completed the eight-hitter.
